SIGI Concept was brewing for some time. The philosophy behind the aesthetics is simple: We wanted to create a modern, sleek looking Feder which still connects to some of the depicted specimen with an interesting schilt shape that would influence fencing in a major way. Unlike other Schilt designs, the Concept does two important things: Firstly, it slides everything down the cross. Your cross becomes as important as with a regular longsword.
Secondly, due to its shape it protects your thumb perfectly and gives a feeling of a typical longsword simulator. The importance of the cross is described in some fencing books like Pietro Monte („And the cross or the hilt should be long, so that the whole arm is guarded“– translation by Mike Prendergast). You might have noticed it’s a bit longer than the SIGI Feder one. The reason is we really recognize the effective boost in defense and sword‘s properties when making it a bit longer. Combined with the Schilt specifics like written above, the default length for the crossguard with the Concept models is 30cm (approx. 12in).
