The SIGI Concept had been brewing for some time. The philosophy behind its aesthetics is simple: we wanted to create a modern, sleek-looking Feder that still connects to historical specimens, featuring an interesting schilt shape that would meaningfully influence fencing. Unlike other schilt designs, the Concept accomplishes two important things: First, it shifts everything down toward the cross, making the cross as vital as it is with a traditional longsword. Second, its shape offers excellent protection for the thumb while providing the feel of a typical longsword simulator. At SIGI, we prefer wider crossguards. The importance of the cross is noted in historical fencing texts, such as Pietro Monte’s, where he writes: “And the cross or the hilt should be long, so that the whole arm is guarded” (translation by Mike Prendergast). We’ve found that a slightly longer crossguard significantly enhances both defensive capability and overall handling. In combination with the schilt characteristics described above, the default crossguard length for Concept models is 30 cm (approximately 12 inches).
