SUMMARY:Sofia Longsword Open 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Sofia CrossSwords team is proud to present Sofia Longsword Open 2026 – a full day dedicated entirely to longsword fencing\, featuring three tournaments.\nThe following day will once again be open for free sparring for everyone who decides to stay longer. \nOpen Longsword\nThe Open division will be separated into two tiers – Tier A and Tier B\nThe division will be determined after registrations close. Higher-rated fencers (according to HEMA Ratings) will be placed in Tier A\, with the remaining competitors in Tier B. \nLadies Longsword\nNo limit on the number of competitors. If registrations allow\, the division may also be separated into Tier A and Tier B.\nAll categories will be judged and scored by our local team together with guest judges. \nRules\nThe full ruleset can be found on sofiaxswords.com/rules. The basic scoring system is:\n– 2 points for any clean hit.\n– 1 point for the first hit followed by an afterblow.\n– 0 points for any double hit.\n– No afterblow after a head hit.\n– Hit quality is required. Unopposed flats are allowed only to the head; all other targets require edge alignment.\nVideo-Assisted Review (VAR) will be available at every stage of the tournament\, including pools and eliminations. \nEquipment\nFull protective gear is required. DESCRIPTION:SEE OUR FACEBOOK PAGE FOR MORE INFO\nIntroducing the next instructor in our Masterclass series\, none other than Martin Fabian!\nBIO\nMartin Fabian has been actively fencing since 2003. He began his journey in a stage combat and reenactment group but\, in 2006\, shifted his focus entirely to studying original works on historical European martial arts (HEMA). He has authored numerous transcriptions\, translations\, articles\, and other notable works on fencing and related subjects. In 2024\, he published the English book Fechtbuch Fabian which compiles his own teaching methods and approaches along with complementary translations of German medieval texts. In 2025 he published a translation and guiding interpretation of the mind-breaking Hans Medel Fechtbuch.\nMartin’s primary interests include the longsword (mainly in the German tradition) and the rapier (Fabris and Giganti). Currently\, he resides in Bratislava\, Slovakia\, where he founded and leads the Bratislava Fencing Society (Bratislavský šermiarsky spolok)\, which boasts 80 active members. He is a long-term international instructor\, former active tournament participant\, and the founder of SIGI Forge\, one of the leading suppliers of HEMA weaponry.
