SUMMARY:HEMA Masterclass with Emilia Skirmuntt
DESCRIPTION:// We would like to introduce our first guest instructor for our HEMA Masterclass series – Dr. Emilia Skirmuntt!\nBIO Emilia has trained how to hit people with swords and other objects for more than 20 years. During that time she has studied multiple weapons\, systems\, and in multiple different clubs\, starting in Poland and then moving to London and Oxford. She has won medals in both women as well as open competitions both in the UK and abroad\, fighting with longsword\, rapier\, rapier and dagger\, saber\, sidesword\, and sidesword and buckler. She was also voted best technical fencer of By the Sword 2019. Emilia travelled around Europe leading workshops and seminars and was one of the representatives for the UK and Ireland HEMA team in the European Games in 2019. She is a member of the organising committees for the Wessex League\, and Albion Cup\, the biggest international competition in the UK. She also organised English Sidesword Open In Oxford in 2018. Currently she is the head instructor for the Oxford Chapter of The School of the Sword. She teaches Italian longsword\, dagger\, rapier\, sidesword\, unarmed\, and tomahawk techniques. \nFiore techniques – Evolution Fiore dei Liberi was a 14th-century knight\, diplomat\, and fencing master who authored one of the earliest known fencing manuals\, Flos Duellatorum (The Flower of Battle). In this manual\, he details techniques for all major “knightly weapons”\, including the longsword\, axe\, and dagger\, as well as unarmed combat. He also covers both armoured and unarmoured fighting. In this session\, we will explore the progression of techniques in The Flower of Battle\, beginning with fundamental grappling (abrazare)\, transitioning to dagger techniques (daga)\, and culminating in longsword applications. We will focus on key principles such as leverage\, control\, and adaptability\, incorporating disarms\, half-swording techniques\, and their practical applications in combat.

For the weapon discipline Sword & Buckler\, we base our competition on the medieval manuscript I:33\, which describes monks teaching novices how to fence. The only person who manages to defeat these monks is the woman Walpurgis – therefore she lends her name to our HEMA event exclusively for women! \nWhy are we organising a Ladies’ Event? That is why we organize the Walpurgis Ladies’ Tournament: a full-weekend event combining competitions\, workshops\, a lecture\, shared dinner and accommodation to strengthen our community and inspire more women to engage in the sport. \nWhat are our plans moving forward? Our ambition is to build an annual tradition that grows over time – in number of participants as well as geographical reach. We at MHFS\, who take pride in our inclusive atmosphere\, believe we are well suited to ensure that this event becomes a place where women feel empowered and genuinely welcome. \nWho is this event for? Walpurgis Ladies’ Tournament is an event aimed at providing women with a safe and fair competitive environment within HEMA. Our ambition is to create an inclusive event where women can participate on their own terms. The event is open to fencers who are legally registered as female and who are 18 years of age or older. The competition classes are designed in accordance with the guidelines of the Swedish Sports Confederation (Riksidrottsförbundet) regarding safe\, fair\, and inclusive sport. Participants are therefore required to bring valid identification (passport\, national ID card\, or driver’s license). Swedish participants must also be members of a club affiliated with the Swedish HEMA Federation and hold a valid digital Competition License.

DESCRIPTION:The Sofia CrossSwords team is proud to present Sofia Longsword Open 2026 – a full day dedicated entirely to longsword fencing\, featuring three tournaments.\nThe following day will once again be open for free sparring for everyone who decides to stay longer. \nOpen Longsword\nThe Open division will be separated into two tiers – Tier A and Tier B\nThe division will be determined after registrations close. Higher-rated fencers (according to HEMA Ratings) will be placed in Tier A\, with the remaining competitors in Tier B. \nLadies Longsword\nNo limit on the number of competitors. If registrations allow\, the division may also be separated into Tier A and Tier B.\nAll categories will be judged and scored by our local team together with guest judges. \nRules\nThe full ruleset can be found on sofiaxswords.com/rules. The basic scoring system is:\n– 2 points for any clean hit.\n– 1 point for the first hit followed by an afterblow.\n– 0 points for any double hit.\n– No afterblow after a head hit.\n– Hit quality is required. DESCRIPTION:SEE OUR FACEBOOK PAGE FOR MORE INFO\nIntroducing the next instructor in our Masterclass series\, none other than Martin Fabian!\nBIO\nMartin Fabian has been actively fencing since 2003. He began his journey in a stage combat and reenactment group but\, in 2006\, shifted his focus entirely to studying original works on historical European martial arts (HEMA). He has authored numerous transcriptions\, translations\, articles\, and other notable works on fencing and related subjects. In 2024\, he published the English book Fechtbuch Fabian which compiles his own teaching methods and approaches along with complementary translations of German medieval texts. In 2025 he published a translation and guiding interpretation of the mind-breaking Hans Medel Fechtbuch.\nMartin’s primary interests include the longsword (mainly in the German tradition) and the rapier (Fabris and Giganti). Currently\, he resides in Bratislava\, Slovakia\, where he founded and leads the Bratislava Fencing Society (Bratislavský šermiarsky spolok)\, which boasts 80 active members. He is a long-term international instructor\, former active tournament participant\, and the founder of SIGI Forge\, one of the leading suppliers of HEMA weaponry.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome everyone to Berlin Duelling Days 2026! \nOn the first day there will be an open and women+ sabre tournament\, we start at 09:00 and we are done latest at 18:00. The ruleset will be a historical one based on the rulesets by Gustav Arlow and Luigi Barbasetti. There will also be ample room and time for free fencing as well. You can read the ruleset here. \nThe next day we’ll start at 10:00 with a team tournament! It’s a bit more casual than the first day with lots of time for free fencing. \nThe event takes place in the Röntgen School in Berlin. The entrance to the hall is however on the other side in the Bouchéstr. nr. 76 (the gate to entry unfortunately has no house number). \nWe can’t wait to see you there!
